An email was sent to all registered users today confirming that a rolling backup now takes place automatically on a nightly basis when routine maintenance is carried out on the system. This will mean that there should always be a backup available that is fairly recent and backups will automatically be kept for up to a couple of days.

Note that there has been a problem with the data held on our Classifieds Section. As a result all data held was corrupted and lost.
I intend to put a self monitoring rolling backup into place that should detect a recurrence of this situation and put the site into emergency maintenance mode, i.e. take the section offline automatically, until the data is repaired or restored.
Currently the issue is believed to occur from an action performed in the admin console and not from any user action so should not re-occur unpredictably, the only downside is that all of the ads stored, including data about older or expired ads, was lost. My apologies to user coaster10 who lost 13 ads.
The whole data...

Please, if you have just stumbled across this site but are a little disappointed by the lack of content, please could you add a review for a marine related product that you have recently purchased. You could also add a classified advert or even introduce yourself in this section or post a question.
Any assistance would be gratefully received.

I stumbled across this website today http://www.tonycanalpics.co.uk/. Any of you that enjoy exploring the canal network as I do will find it very interesting.

The other day I stumbled across the Old Shrewsbury Canal alongside the river Severn.
Does anyone have any info they could share about it, what was it used for? where did it go? where did it start? when was it closed?

Red Diesel (reply) |

Just for information, I had signed the Downing Street e-petition to try and keep the exception on red diesel. this is the response I got today.
Quoted Text The Government's application to renew the derogation from the EU Energy Products Directive which allows the use of rebated gas oil ("red diesel") in private pleasure craft has been rejected by the European Commission.
The Government is aware that this decision will have disappointed many boat owners and others in the leisure boat industry. Unfortunately there is no scope for overturning the Commission's decision, but officials have begun the process of meeting concerned and affected organisations to discuss the implications of the Commission's decision, and the

How do you think the duty on diesel will effect your own boating experience? Were you hoping to buy a boat but are having second thoughts after hearing about the potential price hikes for fuel? What changes will the price hike make to your own boating habits?

I have updated the system again to utilise the latest version of EBlah. The site now uses sessions exclusively for logins so you will need to log in using your username (Screen Name) and password.
I have added the Classifieds Section as well (http://www.boatinfo.co.uk/classifieds/) although this is still being debugged, please have a look around and let me know if you have any problems at all.
Enjoy!

Just a quick note to those of you who are checking in regularly and watching progress, the long awaited Classifieds system is now roughly one third completed, and even if I do say so myself, looking rather good. It integrates more closely with this, the forum software to integrate member and login data better. I am not sure of a completion date for this as yet, I will try and keep you posted, expect a broadcast email when this is finally released. When I am happy with the Classifieds software I will do a bit of work on the reviews system to clean up its user interaction, install an up to date version of EBlah along with the other additions to integrate the tighter security it will then all provide. Finally I will begin w...

Hi there, thanks for stopping by!
I am very happy with WebFusion / Pipex as a service provider, the speed is always a key issue and this site does fly. Downtime is extremely rare, there was once a long outage of around 12 hours caused by a DOS attack on another server in the complex but this was a one off. Generally there aren't any such problems. All of my programs are perl based, and there hasn't been any problems there as the permissions structure is very straightforward. This site is hosted on linux because that is my own preference, I have no idea how the Windows servers perform.
All I need to do now is actually dedicate some time to the site to finish off the business listings sect...

Hi
I am thinking of using webfusion to host a website and forum. (nothing to do with boats!)
Could you let me know your experiences of this , both good and bad?
If you could set up your webpage and forum again - what would you do differently? If anything!

Sorry to all of you who are regularly checking out this site waiting for big things, I have been a neglecting it a little lately!
I will try and do some work on the additional features as soon as I can, I am waiting for some outside input to assist with program integration. Currently I run into major headaches every time the forum system is updated as other software integrates with it so closely.
I will try and keep you informed if I get anywhere with this issue.

Sorry nobody has responded to you yet, I have even tried to call in a few favours to get you an answer but so far there have been no takers!
I hope you don't mind being a little patient.
Could you give an example of the boat you had in mind, obviously different hull styles would lend themselves more to this than others. Most motorboaters would not want to leave their pride and joy to the mercy of the tides though, even if the boat was capable of drying out unattended.

Thanks for the feedback, when all parts of the site are completed, i.e. the classifieds and the business listings then I will concentrate on getting some more users. At the moment I am afraid any new members would just be disappointed. I still have a little work to do with the colour schemes, and of course changes to this system now leave the reviews section looking a little tired, but I will get there in the end.
Thanks for checking us out, I hope there is a little more to see soon to make visiting worthwhile!

knowledge required,
can a 12 mtr, 7ton planning hull boat with outdrives be moored on a tidal mud berth without damage to the boat? asuming the rams on the legs don't leak and allow them to fall into the drive position. |

well Mike the idea is great but your membership is low only having 9 members hardly constitutes "boatinfo" going to need a lot more boaties to join to be able to inform.
I was hoping to glean information myself but the topics are a bit thin on the ground at this early stage of the site development.
I like the layout, easy to use clear and bold, just needs more members.
I just wish I had something to contribute, at the moment I'm boatless, looking for my next purchase.
best regards,
David |

Today the forums system was upgraded, there are a few formatting issues that I am aware of. Please let me know if you come across any other problems.
This upgrade should assist with spam prevention and in integration with other associated systems.
